Proper name [Norwegian Bokmål]

IPA: /¹hɪs.pa.niˈuː.la/, [hɪs.pa.nɪˈùː.la]
Rhymes: -uːla Etymology: Internationalism, based on Latin Hispaniola, a Latinized rendering used by Peter Martyr d'Anghiera for Spanish La Española, shortened from la Isla Española (“the Spanish island”), the name given to the island by Christopher Columbus in 1492. Spanish española (“Spanish”) is the feminine singular of español (“Spanish”), agreeing with isla (“island”). The Latinized form is formally analyzable as Hispania + -ola, from Hispania (“Spain; the Iberian Peninsula”) and the diminutive suffix -ola; however, the underlying Spanish name means “the Spanish island”, not “little Spain”. The deeper origin of Hispania is uncertain. Parallel international adaptations include Catalan Hispaniola, French Hispaniola, Italian Hispaniola, Portuguese Hispaniola and English Hispaniola. "etymology_text": "Internationalism, based on Latin Hispaniola, a Latinized rendering used by Peter Martyr d'Anghiera for Spanish La Española, shortened from la Isla Española (“the Spanish island”), the name given to the island by Christopher Columbus in 1492.\nSpanish española (“Spanish”) is the feminine singular of español (“Spanish”), agreeing with isla (“island”). The Latinized form is formally analyzable as Hispania + -ola, from Hispania (“Spain; the Iberian Peninsula”) and the diminutive suffix -ola; however, the underlying Spanish name means “the Spanish island”, not “little Spain”. The deeper origin of Hispania is uncertain.\nParallel international adaptations include Catalan Hispaniola, French Hispaniola, Italian Hispaniola, Portuguese Hispaniola and English Hispaniola.",
